Do you know the legal information landscape and understand privacy and data security law better than anyone you know? Are you able to translate your years of hands-on experience and know-how into practical useful tools that assist other lawyers with their practice? We want to hear from you! Our client, a prestigious international company is looking to add a Senior Privacy & Data Security Lawyer to their Toronto team. Location for the position has flexibility and the ability to be based in a home office.

Working as part of the Privacy & Data Security products team, you will be responsible for drafting valuable “savoir-faire” content for the Canadian, US and UK markets. These new products provide practical knowledge to the legal community by breaking down complex legal information into useful tools that help legal practitioners improve law firm or in-house efficiencies.

The role will include:

• developing ideas for privacy and data security content for US, UK, and Canadian practitioners and businesses that address law and practice;
• establishing, maintaining, and managing extensive relationships with external law firm contributors who have expertise on privacy and data security issues;
• drafting, writing, and editing content, including checklists, practice guidance notes, and templates and precedents according to the organization’s writing style;
• developing, maintaining and fostering relationships with law firm lawyers, in-house counsel, and industry groups to ensure that all content is topical and meets their needs;
• supporting privacy, data security, and data protection content and product development projects;
• assisting the sales team by participating in sales calls and demonstrating service to potential subscribers;
• assisting the marketing team by participating in webinars and creation of educational programs.
• monitoring legal practice and market developments;

Requirements:

You are the ideal candidate if you have:

• An LL.B/ JD,
• 6+ years’ experience working as a privacy and data security/protection lawyer or privacy or data protection compliance professional in a law firm or in-house;
• expertise in a broad spectrum of Canadian privacy, data security, and data protection matters, including:
o Canadian data privacy laws and regulations, such as PIPEDA, CASL and provincial laws;
o a deep understanding of the regulatory environment and practice as it relates to privacy and data security in Canada;
o development and implementation of privacy and information management and compliance programs, policies and procedures, and training programs that address compliance with Canadian laws, including cross-border compliance
o privacy, security and data protection aspects of cross-border transactions, including in M&A, outsourcing, and other commercial contracting contexts;
o regulatory investigations, enforcement actions and litigation within Canada
• Have excellent drafting and writing skills, good editing skills, and a very close attention to detail;
• Have the ability to write about complex legal issues clearly and simply, in plain English;
• Enthusiasm and ambition with a desire to improve the efficiency of legal services
• good understanding of the needs and priorities of law firms and in-house counsel and the legal market;
• English fluency, and a passion for writing and, including an impressive command of grammar, punctuation, and plain English;
• exceptional time management, planning and organizational skills.
