Our Ottawa-based client is offering an exciting opportunity for a senior lawyer with broad legal experience to work in house as a Director, Corporate Services and Assistant General Counsel at a corporation that has a collaborative work environment.

In this position, the Director will report to the Vice-President, Corporate Services, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary and will have 5 direct reports. The Director will be responsible for providing strategic leadership in the development and implementation of a complete range of legal services, overseeing all activities related to the Corporate Secretariat, Information Management and ATIP to support the organization’s mandate and objectives. This includes overseeing the full range of related projects and programs and conducting ongoing needs assessments and gap analysis of these programs. The Director will perform all other duties and responsibilities related to the position as required.

Responsibilities:
• Lead the Directorate and engage employees in the achievement of corporate and operational objectives, prioritize requirements, maximize efficiency and foster collaboration;
• Provide guidance and leadership to staff members within the Directorate;
• Manage and ensure the delivery of quality legal services to the organization;
• Supervise external legal counsel;
• Provide support to the Vice-President, Corporate Services, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary re: the Corporate Secretariat function as required;
• Lead the financial planning and monitoring of budgets for the Directorate;
• Provide direction and strategic advice to Senior Management on a wide range of issues; and
• Build and maintain trusting and positive working relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders and maintain ongoing productive relationships with stakeholders and representatives at different levels of government and the private sector.

Requirements:

• An LLB degree or equivalent from a recognized university and be a member in good standing of the Bar of one of the provinces or territories of Canada;
• A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant post-call experience providing legal services within a law firm, government entity or other organization; experience acquired within a legal department of a corporation/organization will be considered an asset;
• Experience working with an organization’s Board of Directors and a solid understanding of Crown corporate governance;
• Experience providing strategic legal advice in some or all of the following areas: corporate and commercial matters, procurement and contracts, corporate governance, labour and employment law, litigation, statutory/regulatory provisions; administrative law, human rights, federal privacy and access to information legislation, knowledge of Federal Government legislation, policies and directives specific to Crown Corporations is considered an asset;
• Strong ability to convey complex information in a clear manner to stakeholders and senior officials;
• Strong communication, analytical and problem-solving skills;
• Ability to create and maintain ongoing productive relationships with high-level representatives;
• Ability to negotiate solutions and align interests of internal parties on issues that affect business operations and priorities;
• Ability to work well under pressure while producing quality results and meeting tight deadlines;
• Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team;and
• Be bilingual.
