Our client, a market leader and provider of niche insurance products is looking to add an Underwriting Counsel to its team.

Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, Underwriting Counsel will be responsible for conducting research in the development for new and existing products, assisting on legal matters and overseeing compliance matters affecting the company.

Your responsibilities will include:
• Managing and conducting legal research in the development of new and existing products that will directly influence the success of the company
• Acting as a reference point with respect to the application and the interpretation of policies as well as assist in drafting policy wordings
• Serving as a lawyer/legal advisor on business transactions and maintaining solid relationships with third-party providers i.e. brokerages, insurance companies as well as law firms
• Staying informed around developments in Canadian law and providing updates to colleagues
• Participating in the development of corporate policies, procedures and program matters
• Overseeing and managing compliance within the organization, ensuring that the company and its employees are complying with regulatory requirements and internal policies and procedures, by
o Planning and overseeing audits as required for compliance matters
o Planning and providing training

Requirements:

You are the ideal candidate if you have:
• LL.B/J.D. and member in good standing in Law Society of Ontario
• 4 -7 years of extensive experience as a lawyer/legal advisor, preferably within the insurance industry
• Experience in legal research, contract drafting, product development and compliance
• Extensive knowledge and experience with Federal as well as Provincial Law
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong ability to build relationships with various internal and external stakeholders
• Excellent analytical and problem solving skills with a strong business acumen
• Exceptional time management and project management skills along with an ability to juggle between multiple projects/priorities
• Exceptional organizational and communication skills.
