Our client, a prominent Western North American organization, is seeking to add a Labour Relations Manager, to join their team.

Working closely with and reporting directly to the Director, Labour Relations, the Manager Labour Relations will be relied upon for the direction, coordination, implementation and administration of labour and employee relation strategies while contributing to the development and implementation of best practices for the company.

You will be integral to the HR team assisting in the formulation of Senior Management’s position on a variety of labour and employee relations issues and Collective Bargaining, while contributing to the development and implementation of best practices for the company.

You will be responsible for maintaining a solid and stable working relationship between management and the workforce to benefit the short and long term profitability of the company. The position works closely with team members and stakeholders in achieving the strategic direction of the department by: guiding grievance resolution, contract administration, policy development and HR reporting.

The Manager, Labour Relations is also responsible for claims management and supports Wellness and Operations regarding employee accommodation issues.

Job Responsibilities Include:

The successful candidate will:
•Assist in the formulation of Senior Management’s position on a variety of labour and employee relations issues and Collective Bargaining;
•Be responsible for the administration of labour relations and employee relations for various business units of the organization.
•Provide advice, guidance and support to all levels of management on labour relations and employee related matters including: contract interpretation, employment terms and conditions, attendance management, performance management, disciplinary process and grievances
•Represent the Company in labour relations matters and act as Chief Spokes person at negotiation, mediation, grievances, tribunals and arbitration
•Investigate a variety of employee-based issues, incidents and coordinate with legal counsel when and as required
•Ensure compliance with all regulations and employment laws by reviewing legal regulatory and policy developments affecting labour and employment issues
•Conduct research for collective bargaining and assist with communication strategies.
•Assist the Director of Labour Relations with collective bargaining and labour relations issues in other of the organization’s business units
•Support continuous improvement through examination of administrative processes and recommending appropriate changes, exploring opportunities for automation, and gaining buy-in from stakeholders in order to minimize effort on low-gain activities, and align availability of resources for endeavours that add value to the organization.
•Support Managers by creating roadmaps, "tool boxes", procedures, etc. and ensure accessibility of information in order to foster front line people management skills and reinforce the advocacy role of the Labour Relations department.
•Maintain effective working relationships with union business agents through regular communication, professional correspondence and a solution-based approach to problem solving.

Requirements:

- A law degree AND 5 years of Labour Law and/or Relations experience gained in complex unionized environments, preferably in-house and in private practice.
- Experience being at the bargaining table with superior collective bargaining and negotiation skills.
- A thorough understanding of Federal and Provincial Labour legislation, regulatory requirements, employment standards and the jurisprudence in relation to arbitration.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and communication with demonstrable experience and ability to interact effectively at all levels and gain the confidence and respect of both line management and union officials and members.
- Ability to and experience in providing innovative and proactive dispute resolution and problem solving.
