Where did you go to Law School? Did you always imagine yourself going to Law School/Being a lawyer?

I went to Osgoode Hall. No, I did not always imagine being a lawyer or going to law school. I was always interested in psychology and medicine. When I studied abroad, a friend of mine said he was going to take the LSAT so I said I would take it too and so it began…

When did you realize that you wanted your career to go in a different direction?
–

I probably knew the first day of law school that it was not going to be for me. I did however, really enjoy the challenge and the critical thinking of law and a legal education. I guess I was a glutton for punishment – I wrote the Ontario and New York bars…

How did you make that transition?
–

I was talking with a very close friend of mine who was doing his combined JD/MBA at the University of Toronto. He was a few years ahead of me and at the top of his class, and he chose not to article despite having his pick of any job in any city. He has since become wildly successful in business. We would have great conversations about life outside of law as I was not sold on whether it was my true passion. He asked me one day, “have you ever thought about executive recruitment”? This was many years ago and I had not even heard of it let alone thought about pursuing it as a career. Once I learned more about recruitment and executive search, I was sold. That was 15 years ago and I have never looked back.

Did you have any Mentors or Role Models that helped you out along the way?

See above. Haha. There have been a few people but I especially look up to people who look outside of the box and take risks. And, of course Randi (President and Founder of Life After Law) has been a great mentor and role model and has always believed in me even when I did not.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?
–

I love helping people find and pursue their true professional passion. The vast majority of us spend more time at work than anywhere, so it has to be something you enjoy.

What I like the most about the role is connecting with and listening to people’s interests and stories and what they want out of their professional life and navigating that with them. On the flip side, I like working with clients, learning everything about their firm or business – the culture, the structure, the needs, in order to find the best possible candidate for the job. I feel that I get to learn a lot about many different industries and specializations both legal and business and gain a little expertise in each. Its really enriching.

This role really combines the psychology that I studied and love and the legal profession which I have the utmost respect for. It is just a great feeling when someone finds the right position for them and when a client finds the best possible candidate for their hiring need.

What would you do if you had an extra day in your week?

I would probably catch up on some sleep. Twin boys and a toddler girl can be tiring…

What do you do in your Free time?
–

In my free time, I enjoy working out, being outside and spending time with friends and family!
