Claims Specialist (Claims Counsel).
 
Our client, a specialty lines insurance company with a niche market position, is seeking to add a Claims Specialist to their team. As Claims Specialist you will interact with policyholders in investigating, evaluating, defending, and resolving professional liability claims against them.
As a Professional Lines Claims Specialist, you will manage a portfolio of professional liability insurance claims for our clients. You will be responsible for providing policy-holders with a rigorous defence, while ensuring prudent and effective cost containment and oversight.
 
The work dynamic is REMOTE (you'll be required to go to the office only twice a month).
 
Responsibilities:
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the claims process, including:
  • Assess coverage: Identify the allegations and assess coverage to determine the extent to which may apply to the claim. 
  • Investigate: Research, gather and analyze documentation in relation to the claim, which includes: interviews, evidence, expert reports, legal pleadings, etc.
  • Evaluate liability and damages: Working with internal and external experts.
  • Financial management: Maintain accurate and timely reserves based on best available information, actively and effectively mitigate and manage costs and expenses.
  • Engage and oversee experts and external counsel.
  • Mediate, Negotiate & Settle: Support the full claims lifecycle including mediations, pre-trial conferences and other procedures, negotiations and settlements.
  • Document: Maintain a full and complete chronology of events for each claim.
 
 
  • Coverage evaluation.
Requirements:
 
You are the ideal candidate if you have/are:
 
  • 4+ years work experience in managing professional liability insurance claims (a focus on construction related liability would be an asset);
  • A JD/LLB and are licensed and in good standing as a lawyer in Canada;
  • Exceptional analytical, critical and strategic-thinking skills;
  • In-house insurance industry experience is considered an asset;
  • Able to identify and implement file strategy in conjunction with external counsel and the insured, and revise strategy where necessary to achieve the desired outcome;
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet demanding deadlines;
