In order to continue to meet demand, our client, a public company doing business across Canada in the franchising industry, is looking for a results oriented operationally motivated lawyer to become an integral part of their legal team, in the role of Legal Counsel. • provide day-to-day legal advice and opinions to internal clients on corporate law, franchising and transactional commercial real estate matters
• draft, review, negotiate various commercial agreements including leases, supplier agreements, service provider agreements and other legal documents
• due diligence review of commercial real estate transactions
• increase efficiencies within the legal department and assist in the management, development and maintenance of templates, precedents, policies, records and general commercial agreements
• provide support on projects to help company meet its profitability targets and business objectives
• ensure practices comply with laws, regulations and internal policies
• manage legal risk and monitor legal and market trends
• interface with outside counsel on issues pertaining to landlord-tenant disputes or other litigation


The ideal candidate has:

• Solid knowledge and five (5) to nine (9) years commercial, real estate law and/or franchising law experience, acquired in an in-house or law firm environment
• Member of the Bar of a Canadian province
• Strong interpersonal skills, team player with high regard and sensitivity to customer needs
• Pro-active, motivated, entrepreneurial spirit and ability to increase methods of efficiency
• Professional demeanour
• Strong communications skills and ability to distill complex legal issues into simple terms in order to provide practical legal advice in a timely manner
• Autonomous, can work with minimal supervision
• Knowledge of franchise disclosure laws and legal experience advising franchisors (in the hospitality, retail, food service, grocery or restaurant industry) would be an asset
• Fluently bilingual
