Our client, a prestigious international company is looking to add a Senior In-House Counsel/ Sr. Legal Writer to their Toronto team. This role has some flexibility allowing the right candidate to work remotely part of the time if desired.

Working as part of the commercial products team, you will be responsible for drafting valuable “savoir-faire” content for the Canadian legal market. These new products provide practical knowledge to the legal community by breaking down complex legal information into useful tools that help legal practitioners improve in-house efficiencies.

The role will include:
• Monitoring legal, practice and/or major market developments in Canadian law affecting in-house counsel.
• Drafting, writing, editing and maintaining content customized for in-house counsel, including standard documents and standard clauses containing instructive drafting notes, practice guidance notes and checklists, all in accordance with the organization’s writing standards.
• Leveraging existing databases for content and revising accordingly to align with Canadian law and practice.
• Developing ideas for new content to be published specifically geared towards in-house counsel.
• Participating with the Commercial Lead to develop and sustain relationships with law firm contributors providing third party content.
• Participating with Commercial Lead to develop and sustain relationships with law firms, lawyers, in-house counsel and industry groups to ensure content is current, topical and responsive to their needs.
• Participating with Commercial Lead to assist sales team on sales calls and service demonstrations for potential subscribers.
• Participating with Commercial Lead to assisting marketing team on webinars and creation of educational programs.


You are the ideal candidate if you have:

• An LL.B/ JD, and membership in a Canadian Bar;
• 8+ years’ experience working in-house counsel in a large or mid-sized Canadian public or private company. (More experience is welcomed!!)
• Comprehensive understanding of current legal and market issues.
• Ability to analyze and draft summaries of legal and market developments quickly.
• Excellent drafting and writing skills, good editing skills, and a very close attention to detail;
• The ability to write about complex legal issues clearly and simply, in plain English;
• Enthusiasm and ambition with a desire to improve the efficiency of legal services for in-house counsel
• good understanding of the needs and priorities of in-house counsel and the Canadian legal market;
• English fluency, and a passion for writing and, including an impressive command of grammar, punctuation, and plain English;
• Exceptional time management, planning and organizational skills.
• The ability to manage multiple competing deadlines
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and issue resolution skills.
• Strong verbal communication skills for presentations and webinars.
• Entrepreneurial and leadership abilities.
• The ability to react with urgency and devote high levels of time and energy where deadlines require.
• Familiarity with electronic research technique and proficiency with use of PC technology (MS Office).

Expertise in various aspects of law encountered by in-house counsel, optimally including:
• general contract principles and boilerplate (standard provisions in all transactional matters);
• confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements and provisions (including non-solicitation and non-compete restrictive covenants);
• employment matters;
• supply of goods and services arrangements, including manufacturing, distribution and reseller transactions;
• privacy and data security;
• insurance;
• advertising and marketing;
• consulting, sales representative and professional services arrangements; and
• e-commerce and technology transactions
Significant practice experience in one or more of the following areas is an advantage:
• employment law;
• corporate law;
• e-commerce and technology (with an emphasis on technology transfers and licensing);
• privacy and data protection;
• cybersecurity;
• social media;
• outsourcing;
• advertising and marketing;
• intellectual property;
• government contracting and procurement; and
• legal research, writing and editing.
