Our Ottawa based client is looking to add a Legal Counsel, with expertise in Commercial Contracting for a 1 year Contract.

Reporting to the Director of Legal, you will be responsible for providing legal services to the organization on a wide range of business issues.

In this role you will be responsible for:
• Providing legal services and advice in the following areas:
o Corporate/Commercial law;
o Federal privacy and access to information;
o Labour and employment law under the Canada Labour Code;
o Crown law, including liability of the Crown and administrative law;
o Federal pension law
• Conducting legal research and writing;
• Providing advice on various matters including rights and obligations under the organizations’ contracts and funding agreements.
• Providing advice on the interpretation of complex statutory/regulatory provisions
• Delivering proactive, responsible legal support to relevant business areas to mitigate legal risks for the organization;
• Participating in negotiations with external parties;
• Drafting and negotiating contracts and other commercial agreements including procurement, leases and funding
• Provide pension law advice related to the administration of the employee pension plan;
• Drafting and reviewing relevant correspondence, memoranda and other legal documents,
• Providing advice and solutions to improve corporate initiatives, policies, procedures and governance
• Staying current in relevant areas of law
• Liaising with other members of the team to share opinion and briefings on present issues


You are the ideal candidate if you are/have:

• JD/LL.B and are a member in good standing with a Bar of a province or territory in Canada;
• 2-5 years of relevant legal experience gained either in-house or at a law firm;
• Experience conducting legal research and writing;
• Experience in the interpretation of complex statutory/regulatory provisions
• Strong analytical and drafting skills; ability to interpret and synthesize complex information;
• Impeccable writing and communication skills; ability to communicate and advocate on legal matters in clear, concise and compelling language;
• Ability to deliver presentations and present issues/positions, as well as translate material to suit the particular audience;
• Ability to effectively manage competing priorities and to solve varied problems with confidence;
• Strong judgement and decision-making qualities, and collaborative in soliciting the input of others;
• Effective persuasion, influence and relationship building abilities;
• Ability to self-motivate, work well independently as well as part of a team;
• Strong team orientation and willingness to assist other team members and client groups on regular basis;
• Strong organizational skills, flexibility, and creativity;
• Strong client service orientation, integrity, tact and diplomacy;
• Bilingual in French and English is an asset
