Description:  
This leading Real Estate company with a diversified portfolio is looking to add a Director, Legal Services (with a commercial leasing (office and retail) and operations focus) to join their National Legal team. This position will be located in Vancouver, British Columbia.

With a minimum of 4 years of previous real estate/leasing experience, the successful candidate will provide sophisticated legal advice on and assistance with the company’s Western Canadian assets (which includes regionally dominated Shopping Centres and AAA office buildings) and in relation to the organization’s in relation to the organization’s Commercial Leasing, Property Operations Activities, and Litigation Management.

As an integral member of the legal team, you will be advising on and assisting with all matters related to the companies leasing and operations in relation to their various properties in Western Canada.

Responsibilities:

As part of the legal team, with a direct report to the VP, Legal, the Director, Legal Services will be relied upon to:
- Draft and negotiate retail and office leases, lease amending and other ancillary agreements.
- Supervise legal staff in the preparation and negotiation of documentation.
- Review and assist Leasing Executives with drafting and negotiation of LOIs and Offers to Lease.
- Ensure database of precedent leases with major tenants is constantly updated to reflect the latest negotiation.
- Monitor and contribute to database of standard amendments for leases.
- Draft and negotiate procurement documentation in connection with property operations and national initiatives.
- Provide legal advice to Leasing Executives and Property teams related to leases, property operations, general contract matters, litigation and insolvency.
- Ensure that contracts by which the organization will be legally bound accurately express the company's objectives.
- Assist as required in due diligence reviews pertaining to mass transfers by tenants.
- Work with Development team in various aspects of development projects.
- Together with the leasing and property operations teams, play a prominent role in implementing, amending, and enhancing risk management policies and procedures in respect of leasing and property operations matters.
- Make decisions on legal matters related to the ongoing ownership and operation of real estate assets in Western Canada.
- Play an influential role in business decisions and dispute resolution through guidance, recommendations and risk analysis regarding legal and related matters

Requirements:

The successful candidate will:

-Have a Law degree and be admitted to the Bar and be a member in good standing of the BC Bar (Alberta is an asset but not required)
-Have 4-7 years’ real estate experience with a heavy focus on commercial leasing gained in a law firm or with a major developer or a retailer.
-Have knowledge of legal requirements relating to retail and office leases and other contracts
-Strong customer service orientation-Be articulate and persuasive in oral communication
